Reducing environmental impact and risks: the industrial world goes to the Edge, with the Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform

March 21, 2023

By 2025, 75% of data companies generate will be processed locally, close to the point of generation (on-edge), and cloud systems will increasingly support in-depth analysis of aggregated data. The edge-cloud synergy will be the basis of the best connectivity architectures, as is already the case in the complete ecosystem of the Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform.

In the current context of the Internet of Things, connected devices and machinery generate an enormous amount of data relating to their status, operation, and consumption – data that is necessary for Business Intelligence and Business Analytics systems to produce behavioral and forecasting models based on objective values.

It is estimated that around 10% of enterprise-generated data today is created and processed outside a traditional centralized data center or the cloud—close to the point of generation. By 2025, this figure is expected to reach 75%, meaning that three-quarters of strategic data will soon be stored, processed, and managed according to the so-called “Edge model“. However, this will not necessarily erode the cloud market, which is worth 4.5 billion euros in Italy alone.

The most advantageous architecture for companies involves the coexistence of cloud and edge computing. If the security and processing speed of the edge are notoriously appreciated, which allows real-time photography and rapid examination with tools based on AI and Machine Learning, the cloud environment offers almost unlimited storage and will enable you to perform analysis of the more in-depth business.

Precisely this hybrid cloud model – which presupposes integration with the edge – represents the approach underlying the Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform, the complete ecosystem created by Zerynth, unique in the IoT enabler offer, which allows companies to connect every industrial machine or device in a few moments to generate value from the data immediately.

At the basis of the Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform, there are in fact, the Zerynth Edge devices. These are the physical devices that are responsible for collecting data from old and new generation industrial machinery, and which, thanks to the native integration with the data acquisition platform, enable its processing and display through personalized dashboards. Zerynth Edge devices are also designed to work in concert with pre-configured apps.

Processing data at the source brings numerous benefits: maximum processing and response speed, low latency, reduced bandwidth usage of the company network, which limits the risk of congestion, reduction of energy costs associated with the management of cloud services, low environmental impact, and, not lastly, easier management of both cybersecurity and the privacy of sensitive data.

“The implementation of 5G networks will add further value to the synergy between edge architectures and cloud architectures, making industrial connectivity even more secure and performing in response speed,” explains Giacomo Baldi, Chief Technology Officer of Zerynth. “The Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform represents a complete set of hardware and software technologies that allow to collect of data on the edge enhanced through AI algorithms and to perform aggregated analyzes in the cloud, transforming insights into proactive actions and easily integrating with all with the ERP and IT systems present in the company”.

Zerynth Edge devices: all the solutions within the company’s reach

Zerynth Edge devices are available in 3 models to meet the different connection needs of companies: 4ZeroBox, the versatile data acquisition unit that transforms all industrial machinery into “Industry 4.0 Ready”; 4ZeroBox Mobile, for asset monitoring with Narrow Band-IoT cellular and GPS functionality; 4ZeroBox Lite, the entry-level and compact device that easily modernizes any equipment allowing companies to lead their digital transformation path in Industry 4.0.

Zerynth Edge devices enable a holistic view of factories and even non-homogeneous environments, standardizing industrial connectivity, enabling easy data acquisition from sensors, monitoring of assets, and of the entire production process.

In addition to allowing data aggregation at the shopfloor level, the Zerynth Edge devices and the Zerynth Industrial IoT & AI Platform also interface with higher-level systems (ERP, MES, and MOM, i.e., the software responsible for controlling Operations and management), implementing a real convergence between the OT and IT level of the production plants.
